KRIYA KALPA
The Kriyakalpa Unit is a specialized and unique therapeutic wing of the hospital dedicated to the Ayurvedic management of eye, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders. Kriyakalpa comprises a group of classical Ayurvedic procedures specifically designed to preserve and promote the health of the sensory organs, particularly the eyes. These therapies are highly effective in preventing disease progression, improving visual function, reducing ocular discomfort, and maintaining overall eye health. The unit functions under the supervision of experienced Ayurvedic ophthalmologists and trained therapists, ensuring safe and effective treatment based on classical Ayurvedic principles.
The Kriyakalpa Unit offers the seven classical ocular therapeutic procedures:
Tarpana
Tarpana is a nourishing eye therapy in which medicated ghee is retained over the eyes for a prescribed duration using a specially prepared enclosure around the eyes. This procedure strengthens and nourishes ocular tissues, improves vision, relieves eye strain, dryness, and fatigue, and helps prevent the progression of refractive errors and degenerative retinal conditions. It is widely used in computer vision syndrome, dry eye syndrome, and various chronic eye disorders.
Putapaka
Putapaka is a specialized procedure performed in a manner similar to Tarpana. However, instead of medicated ghee, fresh herbal extracts prepared through a traditional process are retained over the eyes. It provides deeper nourishment and rejuvenation to the ocular tissues, enhances visual acuity, and is beneficial in chronic eye diseases, weakness of vision, and degenerative conditions affecting the eyes.
Seka
Seka involves the continuous pouring of medicated liquids over closed eyes from a specific height for a predetermined period. The procedure helps reduce burning sensation, redness, irritation, pain, and inflammation of the eyes. It is particularly beneficial in acute inflammatory and infective eye conditions and provides immediate soothing and cooling effects.
Ashchyotana
Ashchyotana is the instillation of medicated eye drops into the eyes from a specified height. This procedure cleanses the ocular surface, removes irritants, and helps manage infections, allergic conditions, watering of the eyes, itching, and early-stage inflammatory disorders. It is considered one of the primary treatments for various eye ailments.
Anjana
Anjana involves the application of medicated preparations along the inner margin of the eyelids. It helps cleanse the eye, improve vision, remove secretions, and prevent recurrent ocular diseases. Anjana is useful in conditions associated with itching, discharge, heaviness of the eyes, and certain chronic eye disorders.
Pindi
In Pindi therapy, medicated herbal paste is wrapped in a thin sterile cloth and placed over the closed eyes for a specified duration. The therapy helps reduce swelling, pain, burning sensation, and inflammation of the eyes. It is particularly useful in inflammatory and allergic eye conditions.
Bidalaka
Bidalaka is the application of medicated herbal paste over the eyelids while avoiding the eyelashes and ocular surface. It is indicated in conditions such as stye, chalazion, eyelid inflammation, conjunctival irritation, and other inflammatory disorders of the eyes. The procedure provides anti-inflammatory, soothing, and healing effects.
ENT Kriyakarma Procedures
In addition to ocular therapies, the Kriyakalpa Unit also provides several specialized Ayurvedic procedures for the management of ear, nose, throat, and oral disorders. These include:
- Gandusha – Retention of medicated liquids in the oral cavity for strengthening oral tissues and managing dental and throat disorders.
- Kavala – Therapeutic gargling with medicated liquids to maintain oral hygiene and treat diseases of the mouth and throat.
